Colour options for final piece

Image
When concidering colours to use in my final, I had a few options, I could use earthy green and blue tones to represent nature and life, or contrast this by using rusted brown tones representing the decay and destruction.  First I felt the rusted tones would go well with my concept of addiction, as its still thought of as a taboo subject. By using the hints of red, it gives the imagry of danger, something to be avoided and not discussed. I added highlights of grey to emphasise the cells made by the acrylic and also to represent cold metal, which can be seen as unforgiving and shows the stages of metal rustings, from shiny silver to the rough orange and brown brassy tones once the metal has been broken down. This reflects ones mental and phsycial health after becoming addicted to a substance or drug.  Contrasting this, I did several experiments on large canvases also exploring using brighter, more primary tones to see how they'd complent eachother. For this pour I used green...

Planning Final: Displaying Developments.

Image
When chosing my space, I decided this corner would be best suited for my work. I decided to hang up my first large pour in the corner, but due to the angle of the wall, I had to attach two screws onto the wall and use string to hang it up. I find the string adds to the organic raw feel which my piece conveys. First I planned to hang the metal plates from chain, which I brought and cut into lengths which I was going to susspend around the canvas. Below is a photo of what I thought would create an atmosphere by using the membrane. I then attached a length of light chain to fishing wire and nailed it and used blu tack to create the below composition. Above is a photo of what I planned to do when presenting my work. I changed out the chains to using clear thread, as I found that when its hung up ones eyes were drew to the chain  and the light reflecting off it. Above is a photo of my inital idea on how to present my metal plates, I've changed my mind and now decided to ...

Artist Research - Corneila Parker

Image
When concidering an installation, I drew inspiration from Cornelia Parker as her installations used light and shadow to create art. The piece I find interesting is called The Story of Cold Dark Matter. I find the shadows created adds another layer to the piece and creates the sence of an environment. I chose to move the area I displayed my final piece to an area where I can achieve an environment and an atmosphere. When I used projection in my final I used quotes I got from my survey from drug addicts, and also the chemical symbol for dopamine, which is meant to represent the brain.

2nd large acrylic pour

Image
Above was the outcome of my second attempt at an acrylic pour on a larger scale. This post will go over how I got to this outcome. Below is a video showing the overall process I took to get to this outcome.  I primed the surface with three thin layers of emulsion and let it dry before pouring the acrylics on top. The reasoning behind making another large scale pour was to see if I could get more vibrant colours from the acrylics and to try to do a pour on the same wood surface most of my samples have been on, as I feel more comfortable working on that than the wood surface. I decided to go for a similar colour scheme to my previous large pour, as after having listened to peoples comments on my previous pour, it reminded people of the brain and cells and blood. Taking this on board, I decided to and a peachy tone to the palette to try and emphasize this.  Below are some close up photos of this piece when it was wet. I feel, comparing t...

Planning Final Piece

Image
For my final piece, I plan on creating a suspended installation made up of one board and either 4 or 6 circular metal plates, which will be suspended either side of the main board. To stick with the concept of my personal investigation I plan to incorporate the chemical symbols into the pieces. I'll have drug symbols on the circular plates around the main board which will contain the dopamine symbol. This layout will symbolize the brain and it is surrounded by drugs. When considering the composition of my final I had 3 main ideas; They all are rather similar but there are small differences in the layout of the circular metal plates. The first two ideas are similar in the sense the plates are hung in a linear fashion, however, the third differs as the plates are hung more randomly. I plan to have the work against a wall, but due to the nature of the plates they might spin around, so I plan to experiment with hanging them using different materials and seeing how they react. ...
