Planning Final: Displaying Developments.

Image
When chosing my space, I decided this corner would be best suited for my work. I decided to hang up my first large pour in the corner, but due to the angle of the wall, I had to attach two screws onto the wall and use string to hang it up. I find the string adds to the organic raw feel which my piece conveys. First I planned to hang the metal plates from chain, which I brought and cut into lengths which I was going to susspend around the canvas. Below is a photo of what I thought would create an atmosphere by using the membrane. I then attached a length of light chain to fishing wire and nailed it and used blu tack to create the below composition. Above is a photo of what I planned to do when presenting my work. I changed out the chains to using clear thread, as I found that when its hung up ones eyes were drew to the chain  and the light reflecting off it. Above is a photo of my inital idea on how to present my metal plates, I've changed my mind and now decided to ...

Artist Research - Corneila Parker

Image
When concidering an installation, I drew inspiration from Cornelia Parker as her installations used light and shadow to create art. The piece I find interesting is called The Story of Cold Dark Matter. I find the shadows created adds another layer to the piece and creates the sence of an environment. I chose to move the area I displayed my final piece to an area where I can achieve an environment and an atmosphere. When I used projection in my final I used quotes I got from my survey from drug addicts, and also the chemical symbol for dopamine, which is meant to represent the brain.

2nd large acrylic pour

Image
Above was the outcome of my second attempt at an acrylic pour on a larger scale. This post will go over how I got to this outcome. Below is a video showing the overall process I took to get to this outcome.  I primed the surface with three thin layers of emulsion and let it dry before pouring the acrylics on top. The reasoning behind making another large scale pour was to see if I could get more vibrant colours from the acrylics and to try to do a pour on the same wood surface most of my samples have been on, as I feel more comfortable working on that than the wood surface. I decided to go for a similar colour scheme to my previous large pour, as after having listened to peoples comments on my previous pour, it reminded people of the brain and cells and blood. Taking this on board, I decided to and a peachy tone to the palette to try and emphasize this.  Below are some close up photos of this piece when it was wet. I feel, comparing t...

Planning Final Piece

Image
For my final piece, I plan on creating a suspended installation made up of one board and either 4 or 6 circular metal plates, which will be suspended either side of the main board. To stick with the concept of my personal investigation I plan to incorporate the chemical symbols into the pieces. I'll have drug symbols on the circular plates around the main board which will contain the dopamine symbol. This layout will symbolize the brain and it is surrounded by drugs. When considering the composition of my final I had 3 main ideas; They all are rather similar but there are small differences in the layout of the circular metal plates. The first two ideas are similar in the sense the plates are hung in a linear fashion, however, the third differs as the plates are hung more randomly. I plan to have the work against a wall, but due to the nature of the plates they might spin around, so I plan to experiment with hanging them using different materials and seeing how they react. ...

Research into addicts/ people who are chemically dependant

Image
Using Google Forms, I created an anonymous survey targeted at addicts/people who concider themselves chemically dependant. Conducting this survey gave me a great insight into addiction, and peoples personal opinions on their situation. Conducting this research gave me more ideas on different drugs, and their popularities. So far, (15/11/18) the majority of responses are under 18, or between 18-25, I would like to try and expand this to get more of a variety of responses. Below are screenshots of the questions I included. I chose to ask these questions because I wanted to keep it breif, and annoymous and not be too invasive, as addicton can be quite a deep and personal topic. I wanted to know the different types of drugs people use, and the time frame of their use and addiction. I also wanted to know how they feel about others opinions, and if they're aware. Also just to summarize if people consider themselves happy or satisfied with life, as this will show how their...

Experimenting with circular motions in acrylic pours and acetate

Image
I began these set of experiments by using a new colour patelle as I decided I needed to experiment with a variety of colours to find which colours work well together and match the concept of my personal investigation. I decided to go with a brighter colour palette, influenced by psychedelic colours and patterns, also the classic red and blue 3D effect. I decided to chose this as the 3D pictures using the red and blue is quite an old trend, and the use of psychedelic drugs as declined, in a similar way 3D colours have. I began by using red and blue, I added a little purple to help the colours mix slighty, I added the light grey lines onto the piece to help highlight the cells when they form. As I found that adding a lighter colour in the previous experiments helped me realise that it was better adding some tones which complement as opposed to match the colour palette. This was the first attempt at creating a circular pattern on the plate. I used a sheet of acetate folded in hal...

Experimenting with motion with acrylic pours

Image
When I was doing more experiments of acrylic pours on metal and then acetate, I decided to focus on the motion when lifting the acetate off the plate. I began by working on creating linear lines when lifting the acetate by lifting in one direction. Below shows a video of the first set of experiments using linear movements when lifting the plate. I find that when the acetate is first placed on the plate it create a vacuum between the paint and the acetate, pulling the paint towards it. I find when this occurs the colours appear more vibrant against the acetate. Upon reflection, I find that the second print off this plate captured more of the movement and the lines as the paint is pulled away from the plate. I find also that as the amount of paint on the plate decreased, the visability of the metal plate below increased. Looking closer at the piece.I find all the marks are almost parallel to eachother, which mimics the movement of the acetate being pulled off the plate. Although...

Developments of acrylic pours

Image
I decided to experiment with a different range of colours as inspired by Danny Clark. I chose to use more earthy tones to hopefully achieve a more natural decaying feel as opposed to metallic or rust decaying. For this, I decided to mix some more paints up and make some pours using more earthy tones. Across was the outcome of my first attempt which I filmed and the video is below: Whilst creating this piece I noticed, to begin with, the burnt sienna tones were the most dominant, but as I began to move and tilt the plate the grey tones became the most prominent. In an attempt to try and get an even amount of all colours, I added a small second pour on top, but I found the grey tones still overpowered. Upon reflection I noticed I poured more grey into the cup than the other colours, so when I poured it on there was more grey in the mix, which is why it was more dominant in the piece. After using a heat gun to bring out the cells, I noticed I must have added slightly too muc...
